08 Sep,2011 : Proper design of broadband can contribute to 2% of India’s GDP: Sam Pitroda

According to Sam Pitroda, adviser to Prime Minister of India, a properly designed broadband rollout in the country can add 1 to 2 per cent to gross domestic product (GDP) of India. Pitroda further said that in the second era of telecom revolution around broadband, people need to change their mindset in using and adopt changes of new generation.

"Broadband is not only about connectivity bandwidth of application, it is about change in mindset, creating new paradigm, new business model, products, services and delivery system," Pitroda has said. He mentioned that everything done today is being done in obsolete manner and has to be done in better, faster and cheaper manner.

Pitroda had earlier said that in order to provide broadband connectivity to over 2,50,000 village, the Government of India will probably have to spend upto Rs 30,000 crore. “We need 30,000-40,000 km more of optical fibre and we are discussing whether it should be laid over the powerline or underground. We also need to get GPS applications. We probably need Rs 25,000-Rs 30,000 crore for all this," Pitroda told reporters on the sidelines of BSNL's VOIP services launch here.

The Government of India is planning to provide high speed internet broadband connectivity to all villages under its National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) scheme. Asked about the timeline for completion of the project, Pitroda said, "We would like to get it done in the next two years."
