Improve our roads, improve our colleges, feed our masses, provide better health services. These are voices of the aam aadmi — the man on the street. Can innovation help to address their concerns?
Can we actually find solutions to our own problems by using new ways and new methods? We spoke to Sam Pitroda, the Head of the National Innovation Council on these issues, and this is what he had to say:
"At the end of the day local problem will have to be solved by the local people, people at ground level in districts, states will have begin to solve there own problem, with returns to water, sanitation, health, education, infrastructure all innovation will have to come from ground up... we are not talking about a basic fundamental invention that will change the course of history those thing happen ounces in a while like transistor, genetics we are really talking about to applying existing knowledge to do thing differently to gain productivity, efficiency, reduce cost and expedite the process of development, we do have lot of good ideas, we lots have talented people, but somehow the things don’t implemented."
Through this series, we have celebrated people who have created simple yet successful innovations that have helped them or people around to improve their lives. These are the leaders that the innovation council is searching out to support and reward and develop as the change agents of our society.
Arun Maira said, "Many human system you will find that some few people no matter how difficult the system is busy trying to make the difference, and true in our system also, there some people who are rather extremely cynical no matter what is happening, keep crisping the object, many in the middle who neither the short of leader with that energy now the negative leader we call them with other energy, they have human energy but it doesn’t no way to go so who to change the attitude of mass of people what you do is you start helping the leader, they pull the other people that is why we are focusing to who do we support innovator entrepreneurs cause if we can more of those, restart including 80 per cent in the middle have to them to be the leader."
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw added "The message is very loud and clear we can not afford to do thing the way we use to we have to challenge the states scope and we have to innovate and do thing differently if you want to progress."
We need to challenge the status quo, take steps to question set patterns and usher in positive change. We need to find hope in despair: This is essentially the spirit that the Innovation Council wishes to instill; and Sam Pitroda inspires by his own example:
"I like to start thinking of innovation from myself should I reinvent myself I give my example to my friend, I am son of a carpenter no cast whose father was fourth grade educated but as soon I became an engineer, computer telecom engineer ,my cast get wiped out everybody forgot that I was the son of a carpenter; so I really reinvented my self then you are in twenties, you are thirties, you can invent yourself again , in forties you do different things so you can businessman then you came for work to the government, the key is to recognize that you can not continue the status quo; the only thing constant is change."
Saurabh Srivastava adds: "What we need to do is to ensure, that we are creating an environment and an ecosystem where people are encouraged, to be innovative, to be entrepreneurial and we have system and place that would help, that would facilities them, so whether it is policy frame work that we have in India, whether we create a social acceptance of people being innovative, our entrepreneur failing, whether we encourage our academia and our corporate to have system, process, recognition, mechanism in place so that they can recognizes and reward people who are innovative, people who develop system, products, process, businesses models that are different then what use to be, all of this is something that we need to engage with .
Anil Gupta explains: "Inclusive innovations are not possible without a systematic attention to the creative idea in the region which is rich in knowledge, poor in martial resources, knowledge rich economically poor people. In other words unless and until we recognize what resources is a region rich in not poor in. We would not able to read thing the development model. Its all right to blame diversion, blame anybody else, that don’t have any faith in this state, why should they have faith in this state, when state is so different.
As important as funds and infrastructure, there is a need to recognize and develop indigenous knowledge held by people at grass root level. India's problems are diverse, but solutions to those problems can only come ground-up. That is the new mantra for inclusive development being adapted by the government.
Sam Pitroda says: "Everything to me requires attention, one to expand more school, more doctor more road, more power, every thing required better quality and we have to make sure that every thing we do, does get to the poorest of the poor. So like higher education we can say there are three fundamental challenges, expansion, and more universities, more kids can go to universities, so don't want to have the IIT situation, when three hundred thousands peoples apply and only three thousands get in because there problem of supply and demand, demand for higher education is very high, supply is not there, so people control it, then besides expansion excellence, the quality of education leaving aside top five – ten of the university is pretty bad, so how do we improve quality of education, and third is equity can we get the death the poorest of the poor will did get good education if he or she deserves.
So you have these challenges every where health service is the same thing, expansion of the health services , quality of the health services and access to health services all of these thigh are require innovation, innovation of our own type, western idea of health service is very different its more expensive fancy equipment, MRI, X-rays and lots of tests Indian ideas has to be very different, so we need our own Indian solutions, because some of these western system is too expensive, not scaleable, not desirable, not sustainable many time not work able, so we need to find Indian solution to development, Indian model of development and requires us to focus on local innovation …innovation by the people, for the people, of the people.
