29 Jul,2011 : India Unlimited: Innovation becomes legend at Jaipur Foot

For millions of people in strife-torn areas across the world, the name Jaipur doesn’t juts remind one of a tourist destination. It evokes hope that they shall be able to walk independently for their rest of their lives.

Invented in 1965 and named after the city Jaipur Foot or affordable prosthetic limbs have been used by victims of landmines all over the world over the last several decades. With an idea of a craftsman Masterji Ram Chander developed, perfected and implemented by Dr PK Sethi helped people to enjoy their life once again.

The Jaipur Foot is nearest to a normal human foot in both, appearance and function. Since 1975, over 3 lakh feet have been fitted in India and they now cost as low as Rs 1400. The innovation becomes a legend now.

Jaipur Foot is an example of a simple idea that has been implemented effectively. Is it possible to introduce similar ideas to bring about larger changes? Can ideas help pullout nearly 40% of Indians out of poverty? With almost 77% Indians living at less than Rs 20 a day, how fast do we need to act to bring about change? Sam Pitroda discusses these questions with CNBC-TV18's Shereen Bhan.
