 India's patent nose

Financial Times - GERMANY on 14 March, 2011

FTD Mr Gupta, who has on ground-breaking invention of a remote Indian village has only been waiting for the world?

Anil Gupta If you ask me, a whole lot on. An Indian girl has invented a shock absorber system for crutches, walking easy on the joints when. A woman has a Tondeckel and a rubber band developed a system with which one container to a pressure cooker can repurpose almost any. A man has an empty barrel, a chain and the drive of his motor-designed from a washing machine.

So make simple things that can make everyday life easier.

Gupta is not usually the point of an invention? One of the first inventions to which I have encountered was at that time, an instrument with which one air pump groundwater to the surface was of use. Actually a very simple thing that in India this can be beneficial not only.

How did you get the idea to march on foot to India to look into villages to inventions and innovations that are then patented, indexed and made accessible to all?

Gupta I was in Bangladesh and have helped the government, the rural population for reconstruction after the great flood of 1986 to use the knowledge. When I came back to India, I was wondering if I, despite the best intentions not one of those who exploit the poorest of the poor.

How did you get this assumption?

Gupta I have knowledge of the poor served on them but nothing is returned. Then I asked myself how I can change that.

What was your answer?

Gupta that I like a honey bee would have liked.

Please?

Gupta When bees come to a flower, they take away a little nectar, but at the same pollen can fertilize something, and so the stamp. Both benefit. I wanted it just as with the knowledge of human works. That ensures that both sides of this exchange of something.

But you did not know that? They wanted to use the knowledge to rebuild the country. Of these, but also benefit both.

Gupta Yes, but the person from whom I took the knowledge remained anonymous and did not get any recognition for his performance. There was no exchange of knowledge among the donors themselves instead.
We can do yourself: Anil Gupta
with an energy saving pan out
his invention database

They then founded the Honey Bee Network. How does it work?

Gupta This network brings together inventors, farmers, scientists, businesses and policy makers. It is based on a system for the collection of knowledge can be sustained only if it is both just and fair.

How can you guarantee that?

Gupta 's knowledge, the network is collected in our will, always in connection with the only published author. This is done through our own magazine, our website or our newsletter. The result is a benefit to others, is the inventor of a remuneration.

With all due respect, but that you pay an inventor for his ideas, but not new.

Gupta you have a different perspective from. Suppose a company is expanding in a poor country. Then he wants the people buying his products. But we want the company is notified in advance, what achievements are already there, and people getting paid that they can use their inventions.

Not every invention is in the database

Is such a thing happened before?

Gupta Oh yes, we have in America, Asia, Australia and Europe sell patents. If I'm not mistaken, India has a German entrepreneur from a biomass gasifier is purchased, the more efficient than any comparable product on the market. The amazing thing is that the inventor has completed a course of study or the like before.

Why are you still even on the way to search for inventions?

Gupta in the first ten years, my colleagues and I gathered at the 10,000 inventions. In the past ten years there were over 140,000. Of these, about 95 percent were discovered by our volunteers. The remaining five percent are self-propelled us to come out. Now you think me, how many things we knew nothing when we have our own four walls never leave the.

How people react in the villages on you when you ask for an invention?

Gupta Many are very skeptical and suspicious. They trust the government is not, who has years of time left in the lurch about. We tell them that we came not to give them something to take away or to change everything, but they can learn to themselves and to help others.

Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, the exhibition of genius inventors

And you think you just like that?

Gupta course not. Therefore, we share only our knowledge before we start new. We ask people, what difficulties they face, and show them solutions that people have found similar problems.

With more than 140,000 inventions but you must rumschleppen many sketches with him.

Gupta , of course we use modern technology. We have computers with us and a special mobile phone that can be used as a projector.

Is it any invention worthy to be included in your database?

Gupta No. Therefore, it's also important that we on our way from the data collected can access. Few inventions are really new, we often come across things or devices that are already there long ago - only in different styles or approaches.

Are you interested in so only the changes that you can protect yourself?

Gupta course we try to strive for unique inventions, patents, market them, or risk capital to provide the settings. But it's also about knowledge to share with everyone. Therefore, Internet, most inventions in the free access. It is important that we not only offer solutions to problems. We also show people how to do it and make sure that the solutions are sustainable.

How does such a sustainable solution?

Gupta There are good and bad inventions. If you want to catch fish, you can throw dynamite into the water. But that you also kill many other animals. But there are plants that stun the fish when they chew it, and they can be so easy to draw water from.

Are you also interested in the circumstances that led to an invention?

Gupta People tell a mostly the stories behind their inventions. I remember, for example, a man who could not visit his girlfriend because she lived the other side of the river, and the only bridge had washed away a tidal wave. So he grabbed his bike, attached to it several empty plastic canister and built himself a kind of pedal.

So it is true that necessity is the mother of invention?

Gupta I prefer to talk about "compassionate" inventions, mostly because it's not about the need to alleviate their own, but by someone else. We see the misery of another and decides to fix it.

Would not that mean that in poorer countries necessarily more discoveries are made?

Gupta It's hard to say. In western countries you can just sit down, reflect and perhaps come to an idea. But this luxury poor countries can not afford in humans.

German invent so different from Indians?

Gupta Every invention is possible in every country, but you must remember that innovation is always the needs of the society depend on. But it is quite possible that Western countries are not as aware of this. But this is not the problem.

What then?

Gupta , the greatest danger lies in forgetting. Our society has never been so much knowledge is lost yet as today. Think of all the knowledge that is handed over, verbally generations but never written down was just.

What is the reason for this loss?

Gupta First, because the family structures have changed. What grandfather sits still with his grandchildren and gives his experiences further? But people's attitudes have changed, since knowledge is now available around the clock.

Knowledge is transmitted in schools.

Gupta school knowledge is important and closely connected with the spirit of invention. But I also believe that the knowledge learned people often deprived of the ability, to use his mind to.

Modern man is so lazy to think?

Gupta I think everybody should expose a certain stress, to be creative.

What kind of stress do you think?

Gupta I'll show you. I charge you here and now by saying that a match to invent that one more often than a
Time can use. How would you do that?

I would do it twice as long.

Gupta That would be a possibility. They could also both ends of the flammable material to coat. You see, I have a little pressure put under and you had to use new ways to think about a match. If I had not asked for it, you would have never thought about.

Have you ever even invented something?

Gupta I have spinal support for my office chair invented one. I have a small amount of lumbar cushion attached to the chair.Since then I have no back pain.

They actually envy the people you meet to their ingenuity?

Gupta I am especially jealous before, when I see them often for so little, a lot bring about Sun In such moments, I feel ignorant in fact.

What is the most important invention of all time?

Gupta , the development of writing, the ability of paper to bring knowledge and future generations to preserve it for.

Can you still surprise inventions?

Gupta Would it then not act, I could not do it all. Then it would be better if I was dead
