Abstract: Our project is on Evaporative cooler. Evaporative cooler is just like normal cooler which covers 1500sq feet area for cooling effect and it’s power consumption is just 1.5 unit per hour. So it has good efficiency and is beneficial for saving power comparative to other cooling refrigeration systems. So it’s generally used for the commercial use. But this system has some maintenance problems. Here in this cooler system, it uses water for the cooling effect. And these water particles create the corrosion problem. Here in this cooler, it uses bearing to connect to the fan and shaft. Here in the cooler, the environment is humid because of the water particle so there exists corrosion problem at the bearing. So this bearing should be changed every 4-5 months. So our team aims to reduce the corrosion problem for this system and reduce the maintenance problems. So our team is researching on the usage of bearing material other than metal so the corrosion problem can be reduced. So we search on the parameter and strength and then we apply the other materials in manufacture of bearings. Also our aim is to reduce the maintenance and operating cost and also the increase the efficiency the evaporative cooler.

Abstract: " A valve is a device that regulates, directs or controls the flow of a fluid (gases, liquids, fluidized solids, or slurries) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. Valves are technically pipe fittings, but are usually discussed as a separate category.Valve leakage refers to flow through a valve which is set in the 'off' state.
Under this project work, we are supposed to work over leakages in valve at two points namely, leakage in disk taper pin and leakage in top shaft gland boost.
Disk creates strength and excellent seal of neoprene coating and stainless steel hardened taper-pins ensure positive rotation. A gland is a general type of stuffing box, used to seal a rotating or reciprocating shaft against a fluid.

Abstract: Trees and horticulture plants are generally pruned for better growth, for using the parts (stem, branches, leaves, etc) in different purposes and giving the plant a proper shape. The task is generally done manually, which is very tiresome and time consuming process. The power operated machines are however available for the purpose but no indigenous machine was available at the time; the innovator developed it first time in 2007. The innovator has developed the machine based on his understanding on hydraulic system and used easily available components. The same needs to be optimized to utilize the resources properly. Also the present design suits only tractors of size 40 hp and above and modification is costing over Rs 4 lakh. Hence there is need of developing affordable scale down system after optimizing the design.

Abstract: High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel injection systems needed to meet diesel emission regulations operate at pressures in excess of 1800 bar and involve clearances between moving parts on the order of 1-5 m. For these reasons, HPCR tends to be contamination sensitive relative to its predecessors.
This presents new challenges to fuel filters. To protect HPCR Components, much lower concentrations of fine particles and water should be maintained over a broad range of operating pressure, flow and vibration conditions.
The present work is aimed that to prevent choking up of the fuel filter while in use. Effort is made by the team members to work on the development of test set up for testing of the filter performance so that possible time to choking can be predicted avoiding the possibility of choking of the filter during operation.
Making the filter at regular use and also achieve the filter at longtime base, we will work on the filter testing methods and also various filter diagrams.
Making this even more challenging is the lack of standardization in fuel handling practices and testing is essential to ensure best use of filter and to prevent the choking up with pressure Vs flow diagrams. |

Abstract: In this project, by using cam and follower mechanism to cut the soft material with a specific dimension (such as length, width etc.) which is placed on the belt drive. Generally, the problem is to wasting of the material at the time of cutting. The material is to be placed on the belt which is continues moving by the DC motor. At the time of cutting the material by the cutter, it is to be damage because of continue moving of the material on the belt. So that, some part of the material is to be waste and at the end, the production is to be decrease.
To avoid this problem, the design of the cam is important. The timing of the rise up and down of the follower is very important. The switch is to be fitted on the stand which is operated by the follower. When the follower is rise then the switch is off and the movement of the belt drive is stop and when it is in downward movement then the belt drive is move.
By the using of the limit switch, to increase the production capacity and reduce the wastage of the materials. |

Abstract: Gujarat technological University gave us an opportunity to find industrial defect problem by handing us a project. We observed that there is a vibration in the bearing of De-Nox Water Forwarding pump in the Captive Power Plant-2. Thus our project deals with the overall vibration problem and its causes and giving its solution through "Root Cause Analysis". Root Cause Analysis is a systematic approach to get to the true root causes of our process problems. Through this method we found all types of causes like lack of proper alignment of motor and pump shaft, inefficient fitting of pump house, the fault in construction of the base foundation structure.
These problems were analyzed and their respective solutions were found out. We corrected the alignment through "Dial Gauge Method" which made the pump run smoothly. As Rubber Bush absorbs even minor vibrations, we used this for accurate fitting of pump house. The fault of construction were removed by "Pier Construction Method" and on that built a 6 inch thick platform structure and hence now the overall vibration is reduced to minimum level. |

Abstract: A comprehensive study on the methanol as an alternative fuel has been carried out. A
four stroke four cylinder diesel engine was adopted to study engine power, torque, break specific
fuel consumption, break thermal efficiency with the fuel of fraction methanol in diesel. In this
study, the diesel engine was tested using methanol blended with diesel at certain mixing ratio of
10:90, 20:80 and 30:70 of methanol to diesel respectively. The performance of the engine using
blended fuel compared to the performance of engine with diesel fuel. Experimental results
showed that the output power and torque for diesel fuel is lower compared to methanol-diesel
blended fuel at any ratio. The brake specific fuel consumption for the three mixing ratios was not
varying significantly but the lowest was for 30% Methanol and 70% Diesel. The specific fuel
consumption for diesel fuel was much lower compared to any mixing ratio. It was noticed that
brake thermal efficiency was thus improved in almost all operation conditions with the methanol
and diesel. |

Abstract: Boiler is device for generating steam. It consists of two principal parts: the furnace, which provides heat, usually by burning a fuel, and the boiler proper, a device in which the heat changes water into steam. A steam engine is driven by steam generated under pressure in a boiler. The amount of steam that can be generated per hour depends upon the rate of combustion of the fuel in the furnace and upon the efficiency of heat transfer to the boiler proper. Since the rate of combustion of the fuel in a furnace is largely dependent upon the quantity of air available, i.e., upon the draft, a sufficient supply of air is an important consideration in boiler construction.
In some large installations the incoming air is preheated by the waste heat of the flue gases, and in order to increase the speed of combustion a forced draft (air at higher than atmospheric pressure) is often used. Two types of boilers are most common—fire-tube boilers, containing long steel tubes through which the hot gases from the furnace pass and around which the water to be changed to steam circulates, and water-tube boilers, in which the conditions are reversed. Water is changed to steam in these continuous circuits and also is super-heated in transit. This additional heating of the steam increases the efficiency of the power-generating cycle.
Failure of boiler tubes by corrosion attack has been familiar phenomenon in power plants resulting in unscheduled plant shut down in sequence, there are heavy losses in industrial production and disruptions to civil amenities, The failure of boiler tubes appears in the form of bending bulging , cracking ,wearing or rupture ,causing leakage of the tubes.
The failure can be caused by one or more modes such as overhauling, stress corrosion cracking (SSC), hydrogen embrittlement, flame impingement, sulphide attack, weld attack, dew point corrosion, etc. In this presentation, information related to boiler tube failures are given in the form of some case studies. The case studies are comprised of failures occurred due to SSC, overhauling, flame impingmentand creep. The description of the failure, possible causes and machanism9s0 will be presented followed by conclusions and recommendations. |
