Thermoacoustic devices take advantage of sound waves reverberating within them to convert a temperature difference into mechanical energy or vice versa.
Thermoacoustic Refrigerators use acoustic power for generating cold temperatures.
Development of refrigerators based on thermoacoustic technology is a novel solution to the present day need of cooling, without causing environmental hazards.
With added advantages like no moving parts and absence of HFC refrigerants, these devices can attain very low temperatures maintaining a compact size.
‘Thermoacoustic’ is a ‘green’ and a new technology.
The working medium of TAR is an inert gas. There is no need of conventional refrigerants like CFCs that pose hazards to the environment. TAR has minimal moving parts and no valves to regulate fluid flow.
Once designed efficiently, they require very less maintenance. Because of use of acoustic power, the pressure difference between which a TAR operates is very small.
This means TAR can find immense application where noise or vibration can’t be tolerated. Besides this, they have no close tolerances and can be fabricated from easily available materials.
