Casting is widely used manufacturing processes from which simple and complicated shapes can be made from any metal that can be melted. The most common materials used for casting are grey iron, Stainless Steel, aluminum alloys and copper alloys. There are numerous opportunities for things to go wrong in a casting operation, resulting in quality defects in the casting.
Our project is aimed at improving the quality of casting, reduce defects and to improve mechanical properties like hardness and tensile strength of low carbon steel. During the study of casting defects, we observed that quality of casting and causes of some defects were depends upon the micro-structure of Stainless Steel. Stainless Steel expands upon solidification due to phase changes. The mechanical properties of Stainless Steel depend on the micro-structures developed during solidification.
So in this project we work to improve the sand casting process variable of low carbon steel. Heat treatment is the technique used to improve the mechanical as well as metallurgical properties of sand casted products.
